How to Prevent Memory Loss?

With age, the speed of transmission of impulses through our nerves slows. Our brains contain ever larger amounts of material to remember. We tend to lose the ability to concentrate as closely on new facts, names and events. Many of items in our memory will not have been remembered recently and thus will be in inactive parts of the brain for retrieval. The sum of all these things results in loss of memory, particularly for recent events. This is, unfortunately, usually ascribed just to “age”. This then becomes a frightening occurrence, resulting in fear that we are losing our minds and becoming senile.

Prevention

The underlying physical processes are not preventable, but most of the manifestations are. Correcting hearing, decreasing medications that affect thinking, using lists to compensate, concentrating on new information by using specific techniques, and a variety of other approaches. You need to exercise your memory.

Bismuth Subsalicylate and Attapulgite

The most commonly used over-the-counter preparations are Pepto-Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) and Kaopectate (attapulgite). Kaopectate has changed its traditional formulation of kaolin and pectin; I don’t have much experience with the new formulation, but both medications appear safe and effective. Pepto-Bismol is also helpful with upset stomach and heartburn.

Prevention

We don’t know any way to prevent the scarring in the lens, although prolonged heavy exposure to bright sunlight without using sunglasses is suspected to speed the process. However, the medical problem of loss of vision can be effectively treated. Cataracts can be treated by surgery.  A surprising number of people do not notice the slow decrease in vision with cataracts and delay the corrective operations far too long. This results in needless decline in the quality of life. Be alert of loss of vision. Cover one eye and then the other and check to see if vision is equal. Be particularly alert for problem with depth perception or in seeing at twilight or after dark. Have a normal eye examination every few years, or more often if you seem to be having problems.
