The Cassette deck is a type of recorder, which is used to play magnetic cassettes actually. The Cassette decks are normally used to play and record compact audio cassettes. Many people take these two terms i.e. cassette deck and cassette recorder as a single thing. But here you will come to know that these two terms are not the same. Both of them have significant functions and features. A deck is basically just a part of a component stereo system while if we talk about recorder, it has a self-contained power amplifier and speakers. So it is very clear that a recorder is full-fledge audio system having all essential parts to work properly while a deck is just a component of a stereo audio system. Hence a recorder is considered a low reliable portable device while a deck is considered a high reliable portable device.
This device was basically designed as portable device for vocal dictation. After that in the coming years many companies designed recorders with new functions. Till the 1970s companies had been able to offer very reliable and highly functional devices in the market those were called cassette decks. In that era mechanical controls were replaced with electronic solenoid push buttons. The cassette players introduced modern set of control buttons such as play, pause, stop, record and locking and fast forward and fast rewind.
However cassette decks soon got popularity among people and the companies started to manufacture them for variously use in different professional applications like mobile use in cars, home audio systems, as well as portable recorders. From the mid 1970s till 1990s, cassette decks were the preferred music systems for mobile use in cars. This was the key element for the great success of cassette deck because this small size of tape was much convenient to use and was more reliable than the competing 8-track cartridge. Afterwards the cassette players in cars and in home use were integrated with the radio receiver. The term casseiver was used for combination of the cassette player and a radio receiver unit for home use. In cars for the first time auto-reverse feature was used that allowed cassettes to be played endlessly without manual involvement.
Cassette decks need to be cleaned often. They also need maintenance at times to avoid the major abnormality in parts. A cassette tape is a magnetic medium, which is in physical contact with tape head and other metallic parts of cassette player or recorder. If you don’t bother the maintenance of your car cassette deck then your car cassette deck may have to suffer from major defect or it may reduce the output quality of sound as well. So always be punctual to keep your cassette deck clean and maintained whenever you find any kind of abnormality.
